If you think you have a sore or a wound like opening in the genital area that is either painless or painful and has been there a while, STD testing is recommended for you. More specifically a syphilis test can tell you if you have the disease called syphilis or not. Syphilis is a genital ulcer disease. Chancres or sores are the first signs of syphilis. It is important that syphilis gets treated as soon as it is detected. Syphilis is completely curable if detected on time.

If left untreated, the sores that are caused may cause the easy entry of other viruses into one’s body and increase the chances of HIV or AIDS. Also, if syphilis is ignored, it may cause fatal diseases and completelydamage your nervous system (neurosyphilis). Neurosyphilis may not have any outwardly symptoms, but it can cause one to go blind, personality changes, dementia or even death in some extreme case.

What goes into the test?

To avoid such fatalities get a syphilis test done right away. A syphilis test can be done in two ways, and unfortunately neither of them in the comfort of your own home. In the first method, if you have what can be thought of as syphilis sore, the doctor will swab the region and check the sample under a microscope to find the presence of treponema pallidum or the bacteria that are responsible for causing syphilis? A fluorescent antibody testing may also be carried out on the sample to see if there is any presence of the bacteria.

The other method of a syphilis test involves a blood test. In this method, a blood sample of the patient is collected from the veins in one of the arms and then is then examined thoroughly. This is done to find out whether antibodies are already present in the bloodstream to fight the syphilis infection. In case the presence of the bacteria causing syphilis is detected in the syphilis test, a physician will prescribe perenteral penicillin.

Detection and treatment

This means that the penicillin will have to be injected into the muscle or has to be given intravenously. It has been found that in the case of syphilis administering penicillin orally does not have the desired impact. In case the syphilis is at an advanced stage, the doctor will carry out further investigations to see if the central nervous system has been infected.

Whatever may be the method of detection, a syphilis test is kept completely confidential as it is with any other STD testing and it’s very affordable. Syphilis can be present in one’s body along with other sexually transmitted diseases such as Chlamydia and gonorrhoea, so bi annual or at least annual STD testing is recommended for all sexually active adults over 20 years of age. Most of the times it is difficult to tell these diseases from merely the symptoms as all of these diseases seem to have similar kind of symptoms or can even be present without displaying any outwardly symptoms at all. This is the reason, why a regular syphilis test or STD testing has assumed so much importance.
